Grass Roots Rescue Spay/Neuter Policy:

If the animal you’re adopting is not yet fixed, you must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Under 6 months of age: You must give us a $75 check deposit, which will be destroyed once the procedure is complete. The dog must be spayed/neutered by 6 months of age. An appointment must be scheduled by the time the dog is 4 months, and you must notify us of the appointment date. You are also responsible for sending us documentation confirming the animal has been fixed. Should this not be done as outlined here, your deposit check will be cashed and will not be refunded.

  • Foster-to-adopt dogs that are over 6 months of age: You must give us a $75 check deposit, which will be destroyed once the procedure is complete. A spay/neuter appointment must be scheduled within 14 days of taking the dog home. You must notify us of the appointment date, and are required to send us documentation confirming the animal has been fixed. Should this not be done as outlined here, your deposit check will be cashed and will not be refunded.

There is much debate about what the appropriate age is to have a dog fixed.  We do not have a set stance on this, but we are required to follow the regulations put in place. Delaware code states that any animal ADOPTED from a shelter or rescue must be spayed or neutered by 6 months of age. Failure to do so can result in a $250 fine for the adopter and a $500 fine for the rescue.   If you’d like to read more about the codes we operate under, you can do so here: http://delcode.delaware.gov/title16/c030f/sc02/index.shtml

If the animal you are adopting is not yet fixed, you must adhere to the guidelines outlined on our website. Do you agree that you have read and understand and agree to these conditions?
Do you understand that if the animal is not fixed in the allotted time frame, we reserve the right to come in and remove the animal?
As the adopter, it is your responsibility to provide lifetime vet care (to include annual exams and vaccinations) for your new furry friend, and to have the animal licensed in accordance with local laws. Do you agree to do so?
We do not condone companion animals living outside, for any reason. The animal you are adopting from Grass Roots will be treated as an indoor-only companion animal, and will not be maintained outside. Should we find out that one of our animals is being kept outdoors, we reserve the right to come in and remove the animal. Do you understand and agree?
Do you understand that, if at any point, we feel as though the animal is not being cared for properly, we reserve the right to come in and remove the animal?
Do you understand that, if for any reason you can no longer keep your pet, it must come back to Grass Roots Rescue. You must notiffy us of your intention to return the pet and allow us the opportunity to find a foster. It is your responsibility to transport the animal back to us with all of the medical records?
In the case of a return, if you take one of our animals anywhere other than to the designated location, you agree to pay Grass Roots Rescue a fine of $200.00
Should you return a dog to us in poor condition and it is decided that the dog is in need of medical care, you agree to pay Grass Roots Rescue $300.00 towards the veterinary bill.
