"My experience with Grass Roots was amazing from start to finish. They really make sure that the dog is a good match for you. We scheduled a meet with the foster and my 2 dogs and were able to bring my in laws along as well. The process was smooth and the adoption fees reasonable. Highly recommended" - Anna

What’s the first step if I want to adopt a dog? Please submit an Adoption application on our website. We try to review applications within 72 hours (we know how excited you are, but we're all volunteers with regular jobs, kids etc., so please bear with us while we process the applications). Also. make sure to check your junk folder. After your application is approved, you will receive an email and we will forward the application to the foster, so they can conact you to schedule a meet and greet.
-
Where are you located? We are foster based, that means all of our dogs are living in foster homes. We don't have a facility. We have foster families all over Delaware and parts of Maryland. Scroll through the dog's bio to find out more about them and where they are located. You can come to one of our adoption events to meet multiple dogs at once or schedule a meet and greet at a foster's home.
-
Do I need to fill out an application for each dog?No, applications are good for 6 months and can be applied to any dog.
-
Why can’t I visit the dogs before filling out an application? We’re not a shelter. All dogs are in a foster home. For the safety of our fosters (and the dogs) we run a background check before scheduling a meet and greet.
-
What’s the adoption fee?Adoption fees vary, depending on age and medical history, and generally run between $100 and $500. Fees include spay/neuter at an approved(!) vet and age appropriate vaccines. The adoption fee can be paid on our website with any major debit/credit card or PayPal.
-
How old do I have to be to adopt? Our minimum adoption age is 21.
-
What if I want to meet multiple dogs?We understand that you might want to meet multiple dogs before making a decision. The best way to meet several dogs at a time is at one of our adoption events (see our online calendar or FB event schedule). Please keep in mind that we don’t hold dogs.
-
Do you allow out of state adoptions?Yes. However, it is your responsibility to travel to the foster home.
-
If there are multiple applications for a dog, how do you choose? We review the applications in the order they are received but the final decision is based on best fit. The foster knows the dog best and will have the final say.
-
Where do I get my newly adopted puppy spayed/neutered?Please call the Spay and Neuter Clinic in Dover at (302) 735-7729 to schedule the spay/neuter, unless we approved a different vet. All puppies need to be spayed/neutered by six months of age.
-
How do I become a foster or volunteer? We’re glad you asked! Please fill out our foster or volunteer application. After reviewing the app, you’ll be asked to join our foster and volunteer group on Facebook. Make sure that everybody in your family is on board with your decision to foster!
-
Do you take surrenders? We do, depending on foster availability. To ensure the safety of our fosters, we evaluate all adult dogs. This evaluation includes a dog meet. For liability reasons we can’t accept aggressive dogs. We recommend contacting Brandywine Valley SPCA, "the first open admission no-kill shelter in Pennsylvania and in Delaware."
-
Do you accept cats? No. We recommend Compassion for Cats of Delaware or Coastal Cats.
-
How can I get involved/help?We’re always in need of donations. Consider making a monetary donation or ask us for our Amazon Wishlist.
-
What happens if the adoption doesn’t work out?Our adoption contract states that the dog is to be returned to us if the adoption doesn’t work out. Keep in mind that we might need some time to find an appropriate foster home. Adoption fees are non-refundable.
-
I want to surprise my kids/significant other. Do they have to come to the meet? Our policy is that ALL household members have to come to the meet and greet. We want to make sure everybody is on the same page and equally in love with the dog.
-
Will the dog be microchipped? If your dog is microchipped, you will receive his chip info along with the vet records.
-
Am I guaranteed the dog I apply for?No. We often receive multiple applications per dog. After your application is approved, it will be forwarded to the foster along with any other applications that came in for that dog. The foster has the final say on who is the best fit and gets to move forward with the adoption.

What vet do you recommend? If you’re near Milford, we highly recommend Dr. Mallory Alexander at Avenue Vet.
